New site for Headgear Preservation & Cleaning

Well, it has nothing to do with ribbon bars, but on the off chance that one of you has a concern with leather or cloth collectibles and their preservation, or have a dusty ol' spiked helmet you may wish to clean, I have just completed a large new section on my web site. I mentioned to Rick L. a while back that I was working on this, he said to announce when it was done. So here you are. Hopefully some of you will find it useful some day. And hopefully BEFORE somebody finds out the hard way the almost limitless ways that "home remedies" can utterly destroy spike helmets!

Thanks Tony!

Super info and a great addition to the Bunker Tony!
One question.....what would you use to clean Tombak (i.e. a GKR helm)?
Thanks!

Even for a ribbon bar freak this is great info!!!

Your advices for the protection of headgear are the same for decorations and the ribbons.
Thank You very much for posting the link.

Best regards

Daniel

I'm pleased some have found this web page interesting.

Roy, As far as I am aware, because Tombak is an alloy made from a combination of copper and zinc, a Tombak helmet should not easily rust. You may get a rusted finger print etc on the shell, but it should not corrode the metal. Cleaning the shell should be relatively easy, but Tombak scratches very easily. Be use to only use a non-abrasive metal polish, such as "Never-Dull" or another product I have heard of via my American friends called "Flitz Metal Polish" but I have not used this. As you can see below, a Tombak helmet can be stunning! Tony

Thanks Tony...
Flitz is available north of the 49th...I know some folks who swear by it for sword blades.
