Is this 1813 EK I Class real or not. The seller wants $2500 and has pulled it from e-bay. I have offered him old gold and silver coins in trade and he has accepted but we have not done the swap yet. I am new to collecting EK's and have bought a few fake 1870's ( I, II and spange already on e-bay). Please advise: sweat: No more fakes hopefully.

I know this cross and have examined it. I have a similar one in my collection, which I got into very reasonably. 1813 EK1's are pretty hard to judge, since there were several types and were made over a 100 year timespan. I can tell you, though, that there is one exactly like it (or as close as one can tell by comparing the piece in hand to a photo) in Geisler's "Das Eiserne Kreuz" reference on page 47. The hooks vary a bit, but they were all hand done, so this is not unusual. The frame is definitely the same, in my opinion. The beading on that particular cross is interesting; totally unlike any 1914's or 1870's I've examined. It is smooth on the sides of the raised beads, indicating hand work. I wouldn't bet the farm on it, but I feel relativey good about it, or at least think it's from the first 2/3 of the 19th century, maybe earlier.

The front of the 1813 looks good but the back gives me concern. It seems like it should have more tarnish and age but perhaps it was cleaned at one time. The present owner says that 12 other EK collectors vouch for it's authenticty. UltrarnnrOriginally posted by Stogieman
