Karl von Eschwege was born in Reichensachsen on 24 October 1858. He went zD as a Major (18.8.06 D) from Fusilier Regiment 73 to Landwehrbezirkskommando Prenzlau.

He was char. Oberstleutnant zD and commander there when the war started, going from brevet seniority 1.10.12 to permananet rank as of 22.5.15 B, and retired as Oberst aD. Alive in 1926.

In 1914 he held Prussian: Red Eagle Order 4, XXV Years Sefvice Cross, 1897 Centenary Medal and Saxe-Weimar Order of the Whiute Falcon-Knight 1st Class and Saxe-Ernestine House Order-Commander 2nd Class. His last command per the Honor Rank List was as commander of Inf Rgt 333.

The Heldengedenkmappe shows his younger brother Arthur killed in action 1914 but his other brother Kurt also survived the war: per that, out of 13 von Eschweges in the war, 5 were killed and 5 were wounded.

        Period Sources

The annual Prussia and Württemberg joint army Rank Lists for his rank dates and pre-war awards; the 1908 edition of the German Orders Almanac for his birth date and place; the 1926 "1914-1918 Honor Rank List" for his final rank, command, and being alive in that year; and the Heldengedenkmappe for "von" families' casualty data and biographies.

I could have gone into his parents, inlaws, cousins, and the family's real estate holdings back to the 14th century... but that seemed a bit excessive just for a signature in a soldier's Militärpass!

It always takes a variety of sources when it is possible to get this sort of data:
