    I find the packet just incidental confirmation that Mayer is the maker, personally, not the evidence.

      I just picked up one where at least one of the tops of the V comes together with the I, so feel Dons first call on these being M is probably correct.

      In fact it is nice to see that the mark on my cross shows one complete top and one incomplete top. If both tops were connected there could be the doubt of two types of maker mark.

          Hi,

          in the book by Frank Wernitz "Iron Cross 1813-1870-1914" (published 2013, so after pre last post in this thread) these crosses are attrubted to B. H. Mayer, Pforzheim (the mark is recognized there as "M", too).

              Thank you for the pictures of that maker's mark. After seeing the bH Mayer
              envelope, I have pretty much agreed that these crosses are most likely made
              by Mayer. This maker's mark IMO is proof to that fact.
