                                #143 is an old China hand-that's the China campaign medal I reckon by the ribbon. The "bar" below it is a long service schnalle-replaced by the medal in 1913. Many older guys still wore them until they got them replaced.

                                #145 is a Saxon Unterofficer (Corporal)-two FA medals (silver and bronze).
                                Saxons tended to wear the EK on the ribbon.
                                As DD pointed out earlier, the EK device was sold by medal companies + in catalogs post war, but for every non Saxon out there in photos wearing the device, there are @ 20+ Saxons.
