Mike, that's an interesting catch. Like Don, said, that's seen quite often of the Spanish crosses. It's really something to see this on a 1914 EKI. It has a little of the TR Deumer look to it.

That would have been my second guess. Here is a Meybauer SC catch.

Unfortunately it doesn't match the Meybauer here either: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...light=Meybauer

Not the same at all. The posted piece looks like it may be a larger TR demension cross, although the pin does look like Meybauer. The blued core examples I have are small demension crosses. Here's a shot just to compare.

                      Hi Mike,

                      A nice cross!

I think of this type as Meydet (or Gobauer if you like) - a Meybauer/Godet "hybrid". Meybauer and Godet both used the same two core variants. Meybauer used the pin on this type but Godet used that style hinge and catch. However I have never seen that type of curled chunky catch on a Meybauer marked 1914EK1 but it is common on Godets. Gut feeling, the cross is more likely to be Godet.

Re catch comparison to Spanish Crosses (late 1930s production), keep in mind that the SpanX catch ORIGINATED from high quality (pre-1918) Imperial awards - I am talking pin-back enameled officers steckkreuz from many states, Prussian and other states EK1 equivalents, etc. Of course the catch was used post-1918 by manufacturers and Deumer even continued to use a mass-produced version on their 1939 EK1s.

                      Regards
                      Mike

                        Hi again,

OK, after digging out my collection following a brilliant PM from Greg, I've determined that the core of Mike's type (and my own example) is not one of the two known Godet/Meybauer variations. It actually matches my J H WERNER core and Werner also used "chunky" catches like this. So, upon closer examination, it may be an unmarked Werner variation, possible using a Meybauer sourced (both Berlin based) main pin.

                        Regards
                        Mike

Greg has requested I post my J. H Werner so some comparisons can be made. Here it is.

I think they are a match. The crowns are very very close. The dates
look spot on. Especially the 9s. The frame beading at the inner corners
                                looks very convincing as well.
