Help wanted with this EK2 with very starnge ring attachment???

Hi Can i have your thoughts on this EK2 first world war, the ring attachment is flat like on a Knights cross. The cross is very well aged and the ring and the frame are equally covered in black patina...Please help as i have never seen such a ring and want to know what it is..thanks sven

strange ring on ek2

I have one that's attached to a swival devise that the ribbon goes through and has a hook clasp for attaching it to a watch chain.Yours also could have been used as a watch-fob.
