    Another TR era Ek1

Most of my collection really shows it's age. That's OK, in fact I like
a nice silver EK with dark patina bringing out the highlights. But I
have always wanted a nice clean "frosted" cross to display with them.

This one just arrived today and I would like your opinion on it as I
have always been a little leary of this style of EK.

    3 piece with a magnetic core. 44mm X 44.2mm. 19grams. The
picture does not pick up how clean the outer rim is. It is
    almost mirror like.

The back side with anti-spin pin and missing the dimple on the
disc that we used to see on the early fakes. I was surprised at
how lightweight it was but I guess that is understandable sence
    the frame is not silver.

Mike, what's the story on these crosses, or this one in particular? Who made them? When were they made? Any info would be good, especially from an Iron Cross connisseur like yourself.

              Thanks Steve and Mike
This type always makes me nervous and I paid some pretty good
money for it. I really want some good news on this one.

From memory (I'm away from home) this has a TR "26" 1914 core. The core on this one is fairly distinctive and the size, frosted beading, anti-rotation pin and screwdisc all point to TR period production. I've seen some pinbacks with the same core actually marked 26 on the pin (I don't own one though - I think Bill Garvy on GMIC has shown one though) - and the pinback hardware was a direct match to Mayer 39ers. Of course having an Imperial core makes exact dating hard - it could range anywhere from early WW2 (pre-WW2 is unlikely due to the 44 mm size of this example) to slightly post-45, no real practical way of knowing.

                Regards

Thanks, that helps in understanding these types of crosses.

                    Hi Greg

Mike has it right - it is a Mayer made T/R era EK1.

                    And a nice one...

                    Here's a pin back one marked '26'.

                      Thanks Marshall
The link you provided was very usefull. I was able
to match the die flaw mentioned to the same flaw
                      on this cross.

Here's an unmarked and vaulted pinback supposedly made by B. H. Mayer. The obverse is a match, IMO.
