    1914 EK2 Suspension Setup

    Gents,

I saw this 1914 EK2 and could not resist. The suspension setup is a bit different. Any comments are welcome and I thank you in advance.

I don't think I could resist that either! Was the price much different than for a regularly suspended EK?

George - Yes it cost a "bit" more than a regular EK2.
        I got it from www.germanmedals.com
Kevin is great to deal with and has a very nice site.

Maybe it was worn on a small chain around the neck?!? I have one of these too, but without the big ring.

Yeah I saw this one too, didn’t touch it, from the suspension method I thought someone had tried in vain copy a Grand Cross setup.

Yes Kevin is a great chap to do business with, I have got many nice EKs from him. Very friendly and easy to get along with.

P.S. Is that a solder repair seam across the top arm of the EK?

              Thanks for the opinions guys.

@majorpayne - I never thought of a chain, but that sounds possible. Do you mind posting a picturecof your example?

@Dez - I think a Grand Cross repo (even a crude one) is a bit off. To mix up the sizes of a Grand Cross and EK2...? I don't know.
I will try to get better pics of the top and the loop when it comes in.

Thank you all once again - this forum is fantastic to compare notes and gain knowledge.

Perhaps you are right, just when i saw the suspension ring, it put me off, ok so in WW2 soldiers used EK2's as RK's......is this really so far off? Don't know.
I don’t doubt the originality of the EK2, just the suspension method is quite odd.

From the step on the top it looks like a repair. See the thread Repaired EK in this forum.

Thanks for posting the picture. I like yours as well.
I guess that ultimately it comes down to what you are willing to live with.
Once again thanks to all for their comments.

Based on things I've seen, I think EK owners and makers did all sorts of odd things to their EK's. A wierd suspension or pin doesn't necessarily make a piece "bad". Sometimes, this type of thing makes the piece more interesting because someone has personalized it a bit. That said, a wierd alteration doesn't make a cross into some type of a "rare variation", or make a repro (i.e Latvian, Pieces of Feces, or "you know the others") cross "good".

I received the EK in the mail today. The loop is attached to a "flap" that folds over equally on both sides of the top arm. It lines up perfectly with the step down from the beading.
It looks pretty cool in person.

Doug I have no doubts about the EK itself being original, even the ribbon looks good from the picture. Just with something like this you can never date it, can you? I mean it could have been done in 1920 or 2002.
That’s personally why I don’t like it, however each to their own.
