    Prussian Infantry Field Cap

    Any thougths on this officer's field cap:

    The price is under $400, which seems reasonable. I'm not really as well read up on these items.

    It's impossible to tell for sure w/o handling it.

    It may be something that was knocked up in the field and could be genuine.

    Having said that, I'd be very suspicious of it for the following reasons--

    --no liner or even a sweat band (who's going to wear a wool hat against their forehead?)

    -the visor is sewn on rather haphazardly--really very uncharacteristic of even field workmanship.

    -brown visor and chinstrap (the latter held on with "shirt" buttons (the standard was black; after 29 Sep. 1915, feldgrau).

    -no red piping on the upper edge of the cap band.

    -the crown around the cap band is all puckered, which, to me, indicates it was made by someone with poor sewing skills, and, finally...

    -the cockades are wrong (they're aluminum, which is WWII manufacture).

    Overall assessment--I wouldn't touch it unless the asking price were $20 or less. It looks like a poorly-made enlisted Feldmütze with the liner ripped out and an old visor and chin strap added.
