    Danzig telegraph buckle at Regimentals

While perusing the offering at Regimentals, it occurs to that item no. 28864, a Danzig telegraph troops buckle, looks as though the central plate might not have been there when the buckle was first made.

Is this one of the things to look out for on these rather scarce buckles?

The images are poor and I don't know enough about Imperial buckles to make up my mind about it. For me, this is really only an academic question because for the price there are a lot of other things I would buy first.

    Your thoughts?

Don't waste another thought on this one. Danzig only became a free state after WW1, before it was just a part of Prussia.

Telegraph buckles seem to be the subject of a fake frenzy right at the moment anyway, there are always some bad ones about in the auctions, and amazingly they all sem to sell!

      Bedankt

Thanks for pointing that out. It never occured to me that Danzig wouldn't fit the bill because of the date issue.

Given that there do seem to be many telegraph buckles on offer at the moment, what are the obvious things to look out for to distinguish the fakes from the good stuff, apart from obviously manipulated centre discs?

Are any good sites with good examples of original items?

      Many thanks in advance,

      David

        Hi Frosch,

Sorry for only replying now. It's difficult to describe things, & without being an Association Member I can't post pics. For some real ones, go to www.GermanBuckles.com. The site is not being updated anymore, but should still be on the net, there is one photo gallery of absolutely wonderful "Imperial" buckles, amongst them two telegraphists' buckles. One to avoid at all costs (which appears on all the auctions) is the brass one with the two solder spots positioned sideways (instead of up-and-down) and marked DRGM on the reverse. That one is obvious. Also, most of the M15 field grey steel ones offered are bogus. If you like, email me at k_ortmann@gmx.de and I could send you pics of mine so you can compare for yourself.

        Best wishes,

        Schleppfux

P.S.: I gather you are German. I am perfectly able to correspond in that language.
