This is the Saxe-Coburg- Gotha Civil Merit Medal for the Arts and Science, Type III (1837-58) H&S 1749. A rare medal judging by the Nimmergut catalog price. The medal illustrated here has a replacement loop, ring and ribbon. I assume the prices in Nimmergut would be for a perfect condition medal so my crass commercial question for today would be what percent of the catalog price would a medal like this be worth? Any ideas? Thanks, Fred

Hi Fred,
IMO a nice and rare medal! It is damaged and repaired because it was worn by a proud recipient. The relacement ribbon is even a right one before 1876. After 1876 this medal had a green ribbon with silver stripes.
The "Nimmergut" is a good overview but not the holy grail. Especially his prices of rare items are mostly not at all correct.
Look around how many from this medals were sold the last years for which price and You know the value.
A price catalog is o.k. for pieces which are always on the market and dozends or hundreds are sold every year.
Rare pieces turn up time to time and it depends always how much money somebody wants to pay for it.
Best regards
Daniel

Which Nimmergut?
Daniel,
I have seen various Nimmergut books for 1800-1945, 1871-1945 and until the present day, also some for specific states, others for all states.
My current interest is to collect the EK equivalents awarded by the German states from 1914 to 1918. Before I spend money on awards that I do not know enough about , I want to acquire some literature to point me in the right direction.
Which book(s) by Nimmergut, Niemann or anyone else do you recommend as a reasonable basic guide covering the Imperial period, especially the lesser states in the 1914-1918 period?
Many thanks in advance,
David (aka Frosch)

Hi David,
As BASIC You should have the Nimmergut OEK (Orden und Ehrenzeichen Katalog), comes every 2 Years a price catalogue with plenty of pics as overview.
Also good is the Klietmann "Pour le merite und Tapferkeitsmedaille" It is an older one and gives an overview about German and German allied countries awards of WW1 and WW2. Has no prices but some more award numbers info.
Also important is the Hessenthal-Schreiber "Ehrenzeichen des Deutschen Reichs" covers all Ehrenzeichen with very detailed info. An Original is too expensive, but there are good reprints for reasonable prices around.
Otherwise it depends on Your special interests what books You might need. There are very good ones just for a single Country (Saxon, Anhalt, Prussia...)
Best regards
Daniel

Endlich mal Klarheit!
Hi Daniel,
Thanks very much for that information.
I know roughly what sort of things I am looking for, but I find the sheer number of Imperial variants bewildering and I want to collect systematically, rather than buying whatever seems "nice" for what might be the wrong price.
Investing in good reference material and knowing about what I am buying is spending essential Lehrgeld, in my view.
Danke und Gruss,
David
