    Help with Imperial Picture

    I have these two pictures of my Grandfather in Law. The only thing I really know is his name..
    Is there anything that can be extracted form the pictures in regards to his service in the Army?
    The bigger picture is dated on the back with "approx 1906/08, nothing on th smaller one. He's the guy in the middle.

    Any thoughts or revelations are greatly appreciated.

    Hmm! Four different guys in the two pix!

    Three Hussars--the NCO from a Death's Head Hussars regiment-- either Prussian Leibgarde or Brunswick 17th.

    The hand colored one is Württemberg Infantry Regiment 122, with a double breasted style tunic they gave up some time in the 1890s, I think. He's got both state and Reichs cockades, so 1897+.

      Doh! Tony came by and informs me that the Hussar in the middle is NOT an NCO, his bright frogging is the regimental color of the trim, while the other two have dark trim that shows this way due to the black and white color shift.

      Maybe after the wild celebrations of Canadian Summer (this WEEK, unless it rains ) he'll have time to tell us more before the onset of winter (next week-- at least if MY weather's any indication of things further north )

        2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment

        Dietrich,

        the Hussar in the centre appears to be a trooper (Husar) of the 2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Königin Viktoria von Preußen Nr. 2 - black Attila and white busby bag (Kolpak). The Leib-Garde-Husaren-Regiment wore a star and not a skull and the skull of the Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 17 was of a different form.

        The Württemberg double-breasted Waffenrock was replaced by the single breasted pattern in 1892. I think the coat in the heavily retouched photograph looks more like an Überrock.

          Thanks everybody so far.

          Can it be that the middle guy in the left picture is the same as the one pictured right?. Thats what I was told. But how can it be that he is at one point a prussian soldier and in the other picture a Wuerttemberger. He was from the Heilbronn area, i.e Wuerttemberg?

          Could this be?

            If he is from Heilbronn (the city i was born in ) he is the guy on the right because the photo was taken in Bad Mergentheim which is some 30 km northeast of HN- they are two different person fpr sure- the sign on the other pic mentions the Truppenübungsplatz Posen which is in Ostpreussen - i cant imagine how a Württberg infantryman could get there in a Preussische Husaren Uniform.

              I studied in Heilbronn and I'm from Osterburken, now USofA

              I'm puzzled too. The pictures were given to me from the family and they have been together. Again, as I was told it shows the same guy (actually from Roigheim) and there is some resemblance. Everything else makes no sense, i.e Wuertember and Posen..

              I will look the pictures up again and maybe I find something else.

                Des hätt ich net geahnt. - naja- obwohl- Osterburken is ja schon Odenwald, oder?

                Anyway- i i look at the pictures again (and at the face of your relative(s) ) they look different too, ok the both have a mustache- but thats it. maybe they got the photos mixed up.

                PS:The central StoV (Standortverwaltung- military installation administration) where i get my equipment as a Reservist is in Walldürn (RakArtBatt 122)- so when i go there i leave the Autobahn at Möckmühl and come through Roigheim, Adelsheim, Osterburken, Buchen etc. I know the area very well, very nice region there.

                  Roigheim ist gerade noch ein Dachkandel-Schwob, Osterburken ist schon Baden. Noch nicht Odenwald, mehr Bauland. Aber nach 6 Jahren Studium in Heilbronn kann ich doch leicht swaebeln...Trotzdem, bin ein Gelbfuessler!

                  I'll check on the picture again. Those guys look all the same with the mustache. maybe a picture of a friend slipped into the pile.
