So the medal bar classes (4th or 3rd) which EVERY guy after that long time should have were replaced by at least 2nd classes. You have here a CLEAR GENERALS bar! Congratulations!

Anyway there are some hundred possible weares, so it will be reallly tricky to find out the wearer.

Combination of those bars is unique to the IInd Army Corps.

The nice thing about a "no Orders" bar like this is wondering if he was a General who had all his medal bar grades bumped up to Commander grades.

.....oho! I was too fast, there is also a case.

But it does not belong to the bar.

Why? There is no 1864 war medal on the bar and there was no General Greine existing.

I mainly collect the Iron Cross and recently dumped all my WWII pieces after becoming infatuated with the beauty of the Imperial stuff.

So I wanted an EK with the 25 year oak leaves. So when I saw this I had to have it and just got lucky. I did not even know what some of the medals were; I just had to have it for the cross.

Then when I saw it came with this little case the deal was set and it came home with me. I am bit disappointed with the fact that the box is not for this piece but if the bar is a general's bar well I guess the disappointment is fading fast!!!

Everyonce in awhile you just get some dumb luck.

No, don't worry. By the 1890s a token Order for long service was being routinely awarded more or less for 25 years soldiering-- usually the Red Eagle Order 4th Class. Bill M's got a nifty Frackspange somewhere here in the back pages, with a Red Eagle 4 and Crown Order 3rd that was the standard combination for routine Oberstleutnants. Werner has shown us a lot of bars where this sort of clue: combinations and grades, can tell, sometimes, even what branch of administrative service a military official was in-- because each category had its own norm.

These are the sort of clues which help us figure out what rank an officer got to before retiring.

And sometimes what is NOT there is as significant as what is.

And talk about "not seeing," I didn't even notice the case label, looking at the medal bar instead as it slowy downloaded.

I don't find anyone by this name in the 1908 Orders Almanac.

Hi Clete,

very nice bar - I think it belonged to a general, too. But it's very difficult to find out the wearer... He must be in the ranklist ca. 1910 or later as general - let us see.....
