    Signiture guessing game part 2

I have a 1914 EK group and I can'tfigure out the signiture. If I had a war time ranklist I would be OK, but alas I don't, yet. The unit is Fusilier Regiment Konigin (Schleswig Holsteinsches) Nr. 86. It is sign by the Major and Regimental Kommandeur on 30 August, 1917 and 23 Juni 1918. The signitures are below:

Yes, yes , yes: how badly can one write ones name ?!??
I wonder how Glenn got to the name, reading it could not have been possible IMHO.

Very easy, if you have the regimental history or if you can find the regimental commander in the Ehren-Rangliste (there was only one regimental commander on that date)...

              You are correct sir

Jan is correct. With the Honor Ranklist or the wartime ranklists you can find the unit commander. My HRL is on the way from German and I need to get the wartime RL.

                Ehren-Rangliste

I would qualify the remarks about the Ehrenrangliste. The honour rank list does not list alll regimental commanders throughout the war only those in post as per the last peacetime published 1914 list and some of the officers who ended the war commanding regiments. The published war time "Dienstalterslisten" only give the last peace time affiliated unit.

Unfortunately there is as yet no comprehensive list of ALL regimental and independent battalion commanders but Biblio's "Stellenbesetzung der deutschen Heere 1815-1918" (4 volumes) at leat deals with all the regular regiment and independent battalion commanders and ALL higher formation commanders including reserve, Landsturm etc.

Biblios "Deutschlands Heere bis 1918" (11 volumes) will also give the names of regular regimental and independent battalion commanders.

                Regards
                Glenn

Yup, a quirk of the army 1914-1918 Ehrenrangliste is that it gives

                  a) a regimental or higher command AS OF 11 NOVEMBER 1918: somebody who served August 1914 to 10 November 1918 in another unit isn't going to show all that! AND

                  b) it gives the LAST such command for officers who went into boring back area jobs or retired... so that more tha one officer can be found as "the" regimental CO of a unit... without any DATES given to didtinguish between them.

Unlike the full names, birthdates, post war promotions or death dates, and monthly WW1 assignments of the NAVY Honor Rank List, the ARMY version is basically a 1914 Rank List for regular officers only (and recalled retired regulars) without awards or rank dates, and with younger war Leutnants added, showing only a single line for anyone: higher command, staff, aD rank, death date/unit/place and that's it. A junior officer without higher command or General Staff service will show only as, say, an Oberleutnant in his unit 1914 with "MaD' for Major retired--and no clue where he served throughout the war.
