    Hindenburg Medal??

    Ok I have read some place here and on the internet that the Hindenburg Medals (All Variants) did not become till 1934? I dont understand how that is. I have my Great-grandfathers Hindenburg along with his medal bar that the medal came off of. All his medals were mounted to the bar. When my grandafther gave me his fathers bar all that remained was the Hindenburg Cross Swords. He was here in the US in 1934, came accross the great pond in 1921.

    Any information from some one who is far more smarter on this matter then I am would greatly be helpful.

    Hi Brian, I see no reason why he could not apply for his medals via post. Hence him living in the US, but still getting the medal.

      My grandfather isnt even around anymore to ask. Although my pop stated that his father did something with the Red Cross or something to that nature. But its a Hindenburg with swords and I know thats a front line medal. I will have to try to get a hold of my cousin (My grandfathers Neice). She might have some information.

        it did not matter where in the world you lived, anyone could apply for the Hindenburg Cross in 1934, providing that they fulfilled all the criteria re frontline service, etc. It would be interesting to see a certificate for the cross issued to someone living in the US and to to see who was the issueing authority.           Gentlemen,
          I believe that I once saw a document where the cross was awarded to a German by the Embassy in New York. I can't remember where I saw it but it was interesting!

            ah, so it was the embassy that issued it then ... now, that would make for an interesting collection to have certs issued by the different German embassies around the world .. but to be honest, I have never even seen one of those types of certificates and all the years that I have been into German Militaria items ..
