is this a military wrist watch?

Is there any way of telling if this is a military wrist watch that he is wearing here or if it is civilian purchased? I assume it is civilian purchase..? Were there any army issue wrist watches for private ranks in WW1?? Cheers, Torsten.

I believe that the item on his wrist is a leather holder for a pocket watch. I have found these now and again. To the best of my knowledge a popular private purchase item to allow you to use your pocket watch on the wrist.

ah yes, you may be right ... I did not even consider that option and thought it was a wrist watch with a protective casing ... Cheers, Torsten.
