    WW1 Units info

    Hi all,

Does anyone have any info on these two WW1 units: Inf. Rgt. 103 and Inf. Rgt. 182

    Thanks

    #2
Saxon Inf Rgt 103 remained with the Saxon 32nd Infantry Division throughout the entire war--

1914: Belgium, Marne, Champagne to July 1915
1915: Aisne on quiet sector until end of June 1916
1916: Somme-- heavy losses July-September, refitted, and back to the Somme until March 1917
    1917: Champagne, Flanders, Ypres
1918: heavy action on the Lys, quiet summer along the Woevre, then ground to bits along the Meuse in October

Saxon Inf Rgt 182 on the other hand moved about constantly, in and out of saxon divisions--

Saxon 23 Inf Div to April 1915: Belgium, Marne, Aisne
123 Inf Div April 1915-October 1916: Champagne, Artois, Flanders, on the Somme between July 5-22 the division lost 6,000 casualties so the survivors were sent to Russia to refit
216 Inf Div October 1916 to August 1917: Galicia, Rumania
Saxon 212 Inf Div August 1917 to end of war: Rumania (heavy losses September 1917), then into the Ukraine 1918

      Thanks Rick!

I know that between 6.8.14 and 20.6.19 he served with 103 and 182 (sorry - I don't have the date for each unit.)

What Im really trying to find out would be where/what operation he won the EK 2 in. I know he won it on the 8.11.17.

Do you know of any specific actions around this time for either unit?

      Many thanks!

Ah, this may be a problem - If it doesn't take to much work for you, could you tell me what each unit was doing at the time (8.11.17)?
          Thanks

            Rick: source?

            Rick,

Was the source you used for the above information taken from "History of 251 German divisions ..."?

If not, where did it come from?

Thanks for any information in advance,

            David

Yes, for general first passes through I use "251 Divisions" because my "Schlachten und Gefechte" is too fragile and brittle to flip casually without SPECIFIC and significant reason to. Pieces of the cheap brown paper pages flake off literally every time I handle it, and it can only be opened in a "V" shape to read.

"251" can be vague about when a specific regiment transferred from one division to another, but divisional OOB is not my focus. When I have an award document to check etc, I go with "SuG" if "251" isn't specific enough.

                Bedankt

                Rick,

Thanks for that. Although it may have a few contemporary intel errors, the 251 divisions book is definitely on my list of future acquisitions.

So many books, so little time and shelf space!

                ttfn,

                David

I understand that 251 Divisions had a number of substantial errors in it. Can anybody commet as to what these might be?
                  Thanks.

                    Hello,

There are some big errors in it, which is normal: it was book made by the allied intelligence from what spies or prisoners told them.

That's why you have to check the things you found in it the book.

                        Unit info

                        Jens,

The following information was taken from "Ruhmeshalle der alten Armee" and Reichsarchiv Volume 15. There may be gaps in the timelines due to the fact that Ruhmeshalle only gives divisional composition information at the time of mobilisation or when the division was raised, and for one other date later in the war.

Kgl. Sächs. 3. Infanterie-Regiment König Ludwig III von Bayern Nr.102 was established on 14 June 1709, Standort Zittau.

                        The regiment was part of 63. Infanterie-Brigade, 32. Infanterie-Division from 1914 to 1918.

                        All the best,

                            Commanders names added

Bringing this back up to the top for Jens.

I have just added the names of the commanders of Kgl. Bayer. 4. Infanterie-Regiment König Wilhelm von Württemberg to the post above.

This addititonal info was taken from das Bayernbuch, a 2-volume mine of information that will help plug some gaps until I get more specific Bavarian regimental histories.

Incidentally, I have a 1914-1918 history of Kgl. Bayer. 17. Infanterie-Regiment Orff, if the information contained in that is of use to anyone.

                            /David
