In case any of you guys are interested, the sole surviving A7V (named "Mephisto") is preserved at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane. It spent nearly 70 years in the open air, under a roof made of corrugated iron! Its now behind glass in a temperature controlled environment.

Also interesting is the book published by the museum about it - full of great pictures, named crew members, technical drawings, inspections by the Kaiser etc etc. Also has a great close up of my Great-Uncle's name (H Williams) chiselled into the rear armour plating!!

His unit (31st Battalion AIF) was in the area where it was captured (Villers-Bretenoux) and decided a bit of vandalism was in order!

How many Panzer A7V's were built?

They look really interesting although I understand not as advanced as the allied tanks?

Trophy A7Vs

Several A7Vs were taken and displayed to the public by the victorious allies after WWI. One spent some time in Paris, and two were displayed at Horse Guards Parade in London before being destroyed -legend has it that they were dismantled after a schoolboy damaged his fingers by jamming them in one of the doors....what a waste (the tanks, not the fingers...) I read somewhere that a couple may have been used to quell civil unrest in Eastern Europe around 1919-20, so some AFV buffs live in hope of surviving parts -or even a whole one- still turning up. Not likelly I think, and if it does then don't expect to get it for a couple of pairs of Levis and a Madonna CD....!
