Home Sweet Home, or-- What Slobs Zose Frainchs Were!!!

Though perhaps this was considered "upmarket" from the usual steaming pile of manure out front.

Leutnant dR Burkhardt of Guard Grenadier Regiment 5, spring 1918. That's him standing in center right without a hat.

What are those guys doing in my front yard?

During my next visit of Verdun I'll try to find one of these "waste areas". Things they threw away 1916 are now little treasures.

I know, I know, you are thinking...

"Those German frat boys probably made that place into a pig sty..."

        Nuh uh.

Here's a bunch, in the corner of the same yard as seen above (note chair in doorway) probably a battalion's worth of officers, from GGR5, with Burkhardt on far right with the EK1. Note how few of these "Guards" officers... are wearing a Guard uniform at all, let alone that of GGR5 with its simple pointed back collar tabs. Taken in the spring of 1918, the apparent commander (normal Gardelitzen and two button cuffs) hasn't got an EK1 yet-- that's a Johanniter he's wearing.
