General Shoulder Boards Gray Underlay (?)

Hi, Picked these up (spent too much of course but bullion is my addiction) - I'm hoping for some opinions from you folks so I can categorize these correctly in my little collection.

First is the grey underlay. Would this have been for a field uniform or would it mean something specific such as group attached to? The second is a general question - why do many Imperial boards have those chevrons in the silver cording while some (like this set) don't?

Thanx in advance for your comments. Rick C.

          phoenixpwb,

If your boards have no color "darts" (and they appear to have none), they are not from the Kaiserzeit. There was not gray underlay for generals during the period either. I would sugest that you look to a later period for your answer.

Chip, Bob over on the SS Forum doesn't believe they're Third Reich boards.

            As to the grey underlay:

(So I guess there were gray backed boards. We still have the "dart" or chevron question. Any guidance?)
