The Red Eagle Order with Swords
Well, a pretty rare bird, we've seen a lot of photos of bad ones. This bar popped up on eBay. A real one. Rough, but real, with some serious history behind it. BUT, wouldn't a soldat have to receive the PCO with swords, prior to receiving the RAO? Or, were regulations different ca. 1866/1870? With the smooth arms it would have to be 1666/1870 award. I believe this to be original to the bar. An EK2 just would not have hung properly off this bar. Or, am I reaching here?

Personally, I'd find a pro to fix it, but only the missing area. I'd leave the rest alone. Call it a "restoration". Trick would be to find someone you could trust to do a proper job. Perfectly acceptible IMO, but only the owner discloses this if and when it is resold.Comment

It is impossible to "fix" it like the old medaillion was. So let it as it is!Comment

I wouldn't touch it, too. Although I have heard, while being at the show in Stuttgart, that there is a guy (former employee of a German museum) that was/is very good at repairing enamel chips of such medals, like also the BMVO... Interesting! So beware... many enameled order could have been already completely repaired and it could be really difficult to tell!

Hi guys,
the swords on the REO needs proper inspection. Hard to tell from that scan. I´m always VERY careful with smooth-arm red eagles with swords. There were some hundred awarded before 1870.
An earlier award of the KO4X is not necessary. Normally the REO 4 went to captains and the KO4 to Lt´s but even Hindenburg got his REO4X 1866 as young Lt.

Hi Rick,
I think the bar is a little bit wrong. No officer who got the KDM 1866 Für treue Krieger was awarded with the red eagle with swords and 1870/71 only the EK 2 was awarded.
There are two possiblities: There must be the KDM 1866 Königgrätz or Mainarmee or the EK 2 1870.
