here's the 3rd Company office of bavarian Ersatz Regiment 1, 39th Bavarian Reserve Division. Sender Hermann Huber I had a "pre-war flashback" and dated this (sic) "26. Febr. 14" but the unit Feldpost stamp is 28.5.16. At this time, the division held the sector between Ban de Sapt and Ste. Marie aux Mines in Alsace.

The little sign over the door says "Drachenloch"-- "Dragon's Hole"!

Note the early gasmask belt pouch on the man at far left.

Of course, when cement wasn't available, pine trees and good old dirt were pretty good. This Bavarian medical bunker (note the driver in leather at left) was mailed back home in München on 6 September 1915 by Hans Horn (X over his head 5th from right with his left elbow on the table), who reported that this bunker took a direct shell hit on 24 August with no injury to anyone inside.
