        The core has been painted with some thick paint. You can see the brush strokes in the finish. Probably by someone who used model paint as it came from the bottle without being properly thinned for a better flow and lay down.

          Hey Tony,

          Yep, my thoughts as well. The cross looks ok as far as hardware. However, here we go with an "engraved" piece again. What's the concensous on this style engraving? I believe I've seen it somewhere before ...........

          Funny how the "800" has patina in the digits, but the engraving does not appear to exibit this same look?

                Some of the seeming discrepency between the silver mark and the engraving could be due to angle and light. Also, if the frame and reverse were cleaned (like when the core was repainted), the shallower engraving might have gotten cleaner than the deeper stamp.
