    Unknown arm-badge (cloth)

Does anybody know what the meaning of this badge is? Possibly "Werfer" (mine-trower / mortar)?

      Gran Sasso,

Wonderful photo. I have not seen this badge before. There were a number of specialty patches created (unofficially) in the field. This occurred when various specialties, which had formerly been external to the infantry regiment were created. Thus, the "M", "MW", "N", "P", "GW", "INA", etc. patches arose. I think your guess is probably correct, that is, the "W" stands for Werfer, as in Handgranatenwerfer or Minenwerfer or Granatenwerfer. Your soldier is a Saxon.

Also of interest are the cloth covers for his shoulder straps. These look like field fabrications.
