    Medals to identify

Sorry, You should get used to it now again. Spring, summer and fall are fleamarket-seasons. And after each fleamarket I come home with several photos I need identification.

This portrait catched my eye as this guy has quite a lot medals and two breast awards which I do not know. Are they on the right side, by the way ?

    Another one I got today:

    Two questions:

    Is that an officer ?
What is that cord hanging round his breast ?

The photo was made in Hannover.

    Kind regards
    Robert

The two pinback awards are Bavarian Kriegerbund from the 1920s and usually worn under the medal bar.

BTW, he is wearing the wrong medal on the next to last ribbon, which is for the "German Honor Legion" with combatants device!

The very young Guard Uhlan is only a private, in full dress, wearing his cap cords in a funny way looped across his chest!

Has anyone ever seen them worn that way?

      Ulan

      Robert,

he appears to be a trooper (Ulan) of the Königs-Ulanen-Regiment (1.Hannoversches) Nr. 13 (white facings). The cords are the cap lines or Fangschnüre. They are not usually so elegantly platted.

      Regards
      Glenn

        Veteran picture

        Thanks for the infos.
I found the veteran on another photo from that stock.

Here he is again, standing behind the veteran in uniform:

The flag is from the veterans of the machine-gunners company of the bavarian 1st Jäger Bataillon, which was part of the german Alpenkorps in 1915.

In that photo lot there are also some photos from this unit in the dolomites mountains and a memorial postcard, so that's why I can say it so exactly.

        Kind regards
        Robert

Here's the memorial postcard, note the same insignia as on the veterans flag above:

And here is a photo of the machine-gunners of that unit:

          Kind regards

Nice bunch Robert! Were they sold as a lot, or just among a box full of unsorted photos?

It is always nice to keep things together to tell more of the owner's story. Jeff and I have squatted at shows going through POUNDS of loose photos trying to match ones to the same guy back up before they are dispersed to the winds.

I think maybe photo collectors are crazy.

Yes, they were all together in a box. I bought the whole lot to get them for less money, but that crazy seller counted them each by each and told me a horrible high price first. I insisted long enough to get them for a reasonable price, not really cheap for bavarian fleamarkets, but still okay. The majority of the photos is from 2nd WW, from a Gebirgsjäger, still have to check out units and locations but definetely some good photos from the Kaukasus, so it probably is the 1st mountain division. I think the photos are from a family, father and son maybe.
Me as a collector, I hate it, when photos are sold each by each and lots are spread all over. That destroys the historical effect of the lot. But that's common practice on Ebay now.
Thank god, there are still some collectors who offer me complete albums without taking out the "best shots", but they get more expensive all the time.
Collectors are crazy, yes. It is like a drug, when I do not get good photos week by week I get nervous, I am in a bad mood, can not sleep calm and have bad dreams. I wonder what a doctor would say.

              Kind regards
              Robert

wow! Nice photos. Is that not a Bav. Golden Wedding Annivsry medal in 3rd place? Looks like he added some sort of Regimental Thaler to the german honor Legion medal ribbon. Interesting to see this done at the time.
the second picture is also a prize-with the Bav MMC2 (?) next to a Bav, MMC3 . Great snaps! I am jealous.
