    exact ID anyone?

Can anyone tell me what these are? What would the hole be in the bottom plate for, is there a device missing?

Tony and Glenn will know what the top thingum is. Off the top of my head, it looks like part of an African Askari's "fez" looking canvas bucket cap, missing the bannered imperial crown over the eagle's head, and it's legs and tail.

Whether that is original, or if there are fakes, I dunno. Could we see the back of that one, for those who do know?

Last fall's Siebentritt Colonial Collection auction at Kube's had similar items pictured as Lots 187 (colonial administration spike), 220 (1st pattern Schutztruppen pith helmet), and close on 235 in black and white for what appears to be the larger native NCO version shown in color as 233. From the size, yours looks like 234 for ordinary privates. I'll try scanning without stripes.

The lower one is missing a Reserve-Landwehr Cross, which should cover up the chest.

I knew the scanner was going to make stripes! Oh well, the private's canvas fez on the right appears to bear your upper insignia, shape and size, damage as noted. © Kube's 98th Auction, the Siebentritt Colonial Collection catlog from last October. This complete bit of insanely rare headgear went for € 3,300.

Again © from Kube's 98th Auction, the Siebentritt Colonial collection, last October. This is the NCOs' eagle, but a straight on view to show what is missing:

The lower plate is a normal Prussian helmet plate with a hole made in it to hang it up somewhere I guess. Landwehr- and Reserve-plates son't have mottos normally...

Thanks Guys, I assume they were souveniers from a South African who fought in German East Africa.
            All the best
