Medal ID for General on Horseback

This picture was buried in some papers. I think it's without doubt a great shot of Lt. Gen. von Etzel. And, finally, I have a good shot of his medal bar.

Here's the overall shot with his troops marching off to the right.

That was about full size for the photo. They must have used some great film in those days.

I can maybe ID all but the third medal device.

      1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class
Prussian Red Eagle Order 4th Class X
Prussian Crown Order 3rd Class X
      Prussian XXV Years Service Cross
      China Medal 1900-1901
      1897 Centenary Medal

That's my guess but the device on the third
      looks weird to me...

Now we wait and see if I've learned anything!

That's the Red Eagle Order 3rd Class with Bow on the statutory ribbon.

Here's a clearer view of a REO 3rd "bow tie" (very often NOT found on attributable ribbon bars-- I imagine that it would have pulled off in the field or rubbing under an overcoat)

Ah, so THAT'S what he attached to a smaller lapel piece after the war! I think that mystery is solved. WAY TO GO RICK!

            NIIICE pic,

but still no EK on it. the first 2 ribbons are the RAO and KO with swords. Note that he is wearing just Prussian / Imperial decorations; nothing other German or Foreign.

            Best regards

            Daniel

              Pre War

No iron cross because this photgraph is still prewar. Günther von Etzel is still shown as a Dragoon Oberst.

              Regards
              Glenn
