--I figured I'd throw this one out there for speculation. As you can see, the iron core is bent. The photos included here are of the left and right arms respectively. The top and bottom arms show minute signs of this, but not enough to warrant posting images.
--I have always been of the opinion that the arms were bent backwards by the recipient or a former owner, and then bent back (maybe an aborted attempt at convexing the award). Another sign of applied pressure is that the left hinge-pin is broken. The frame itself is slightly warped, I included a photo of the back as well but it doesn't really illustrate this point. Could it have been crushed? Maybe.
--I think I may have just answered my question before I asked it, sort of... It had to do with the paint on the core, which is in pretty good shape and not flaking where bent.. If the core was bent, the paint might not flake off, but I figured that if it was bent BACK - the paint might chip (if not break the core altogether). It just occurred to me that the iron core didn't really bend back when the frame did.
--Does bending them affect the paint after time? Is there a certain type of crazing that one would expect?
--Sorry, I forgot to edit the reverse photo and it was too big. I'll get to it later if necessary.
