    Advice on 1870 EK2

I'm looking for some advice on this EK. I find that the trifold ribbon, oakleaves and silver frame are convincing. The frame is of a three piece construction and the core is magnetic. The crown shows very nice detail, however it's the date that seems a bit strange. Specifically it is the "7" that bothers me. It seems that it is incomplete - the top is a bit shorter than usual. But if you look real close, it actually has a pretty crisp shape. Has anyone seen anything like this? I have tried to show some images below. The first two were taken with my scanner. They give you an overall feel for the piece but actually make the details look lousy. I tried to take better pictures of the obverse with my camera - they are the 3rd and 4th images below.

    Thanks,
    Brian

          Well, I like it.

I like it a lot. All looks original to me. Of course it was probably awarded to a Saxon........

Thanks for the feedback guys. I REALLY appreciate it. I was extra paranoid with this EK as I got a pretty good deal on it. I kind of took a chance with this one and it seems to have worked out. I guess when there is chance of getting an item like this for less than it is worth, the "too good to be true" thing starts to haunt me. Last night, I looked closely at the various 1870 EKs in "The Iron Time" and it appears that this cross has the exact same details as the large EK1 shown on the page with the Kaiser's EK. I don't have the page number now because I am at work, but I think these could have been produced from a similar die.

              Thanks again,
              Brian

                A little late, but....

Put me down as a "yes" also! Nice EK!

Hope I.m not nit picking, but the crown looks slightly off
center. More margin on the right than left. Could just be
the camera angle. The year"1870" looks slightly rough.
The "8" looks a bit slanting left, the "0" barely taller than
                  the other numbers.
I wouldn't want to say it's not orig., just my observations.

Paul your observations are correct but the cross is original. I would love to find a perfect cross but I haven't found one. The symmetry isn't a true sign of its originality, but part of it.

I agree with Greg. I have three 1870 EK 2s, but none of them is "perfect."

Also, it may be that if the core is loose and has a degree of side to side movement, this may account for the crown being off centre??

                        Best regards,
                        Adrian.

                          No problem.

                          Hello Brian,

A very nice original example. You did well.
