I posted this in the wehrmacht military forum, and with a little prodding from Rick Lundstrom, have reposted here, with his answer:
I picked this little medal up years ago, and came across it recently when I was searching through some old boxes. It's a little more than 1 inch square, has a red, white, and blue ribbon, has the dates 1848 and 1849 on the right and left arms, and two rampant lions and a thistle(Scottish)in the center. No other markings, but it is heavy for it's size. Approximatly 1/16 of an inch thick, and looks like it may have been painted black, or has a very heavy black patina. Any thoughts? Thanks,

Rick--uhoh, you've strayed from the Path of Light and Righteousness--this should be in the Imperial Forum! You should repost it there so we can go oohh and ahhh--
This is the 1848-49 War Commemorative Cross for the Schleswig-Holstein Army, created in Kiel on 2 July 1850. The blackened finish cross, 28mm across, with ribbon 26mm wide in S-H's colors red-white-blue, was cast from iron cannons taken off the Danish warship "Christian VIII" taken in the battle of Eckernfo"rde on 5 April 1849.
Poor Schleswig-Holstein was repeatedly fought over from 1848 to 1866, before finally being partitioned between Denmark and Germany, and ceasing to exist as a separate State. "Book value" about DM 150/$75--but this is the first one I've seen in years! Rick
