    Wwi U-boat Badge Award Certificate

I just acquired a very scarce award certificate for the W.W.I U-Boat Badge. I would like to share it with everyone interested the U-Boat Service. The recipient, Fritz Niemand, had a very lengthily career with the German Navy serving from 1911 to 1943. He rose through the ranks to attain the rank of Konteradmiral in 1941.

Interesting also because it was prepared immediately "post-Armistice", a time of near-anarchy in Germany and especially in the German Navy.

Can anyone tell me the the duties of the UNTERSEEBOOTS-ABNAHME-KOMMISSION?

Most likely it would have been decommissioning them i.e. taking them out of service.

            Hello translator,

it' s not the decommission, but the commission of new boats from the shipyard.

              Sehr geehrter Herr Nickel,

Of course, if you're a German I will always defer to you on usage issues in your own language; however, my online Woerterbuch gives the following:

Abnahme (Substantiv; Femininum; die ... eine) decline
              decrease
              reduction
              acceptance
              decrement
              abatement
              depression
              fall
              loss
              removal
              decrescence

Now, I am perfectly willing to accept the third definition, i.e. "acceptance", but I do find it hard to believe that, on 25 November 1918, the Imperial Navy was "accepting" any new U-boats.

                All,

Having re-read the award document, I note that the actual award date pre-dated the date of the award document by several months. It appears that the engineer in question actually earned the award in July, 1918. Because of this, of course I'm willing "accept" Herr Nickel's assertion that the "Kommission" in question here was in reality one of U-Boat "acceptance".
