    Lippe-Detmold Militaerverdienstmedaille

    Hello!

Rick, what can you tell me about this "Lippe-Detmold Militaerverdienstmedaille mit Schwertern"? Is it rare? For which deeds was it awarded, because Lippe-Detmold had the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. and 2. Klasse and the "Kreuz fuer heldenmuetige Tat" too.

This is an excellent medal and quite scarce that was given ONLY to Lippe-Detmold subjects in the IInd Battalion of Infantry Regiment 55 who were:

    1) Enlisted men who were wounded in World War One AND had not yet received an Iron Cross 2nd class.

This medal continued to be worn even after any bravery awards were won. I'm not sure if it continued to be awarded after the army Wound Badge was instituted in 1918, but it may have been.

An illustration of this ribbon--with swords on it taken from the obverse design--will appear in my Ribbon Bar Article in the spring.

The Medal was originally an all purpose and Campaign Medal in the 19th Century, but that was a different design.

Given the fact that this medal was only awarded to SOME enlisted men in a SINGLE Battalion of the Imperial German Army under limited conditions (BEFORE receiving an EK2, or else not eligible), I would say it is one of the rarest and most undervalued WWI awards there is.

The statutes are set out in von Hessenthal and Schreiber, p. 201.
