1870 EK miniature
Hi, I have an 1870 EK miniature with a 25 year oak leaf with spang for the WWI iron cross. The spang does not clip on the ribbon, it slides thru. On the back of the ribbon there is a button for a lapel and it is on a non combatan ribbon. There was probably a lot less of these awarded compared to the combat type. The recipient must have been in his 60's to receive the Iron cross in WWI. Does anyone know much about these awards for noncombatants. DEL

Any chance we could get scans/pix of the obverse/reverse. Sounds interesting, but I think we'd need to see it. You are correct on the age front, a fellow would have to have been quite old to get a repeat! -
Del--even MORE interesting--your recipient was a NON-combatant in BOTH wars! Recipients of the "white-black" EK2 tended to be overage--either military officials, or civilians, so chances are this man was WELL into his 70s during WWI. The figures I've got from old German sources show 4,013 non-combatant 1870 EK 2s. There were a grand total of about 13,000 of those for WWI (10,000 of those being post-Armistice). How many were SPANGE re-awards?---can't have been many! We'd all love to see scans of this wonderful piece! RickComment
