Whoa! way too big, and fuzzy, but close enough!

A very nice EK document to Machine Gunner (Schu"tze) Johann Christoph Behrens of the 3rd Machine Gun Company, Reserve Infantry Regiment 88, dated 10 December 1917.

RIR 88 was in the 21st Reserve Division, recruited mainly from Hessen-Nassau.

having been chewed up at Verdun in 1916, the division was in a quiet sector of Champagne from July until November 1917 recovering from more severe losses in April and May against the French along the Aisne.

So this award was probably for action at the end of November or early Decmber south of the Bapaume-Cambrai road southeast of Bourlon.

This is a particularly impressive doument for one issued at battalion level.

The ribbon bar is: EK2 '14, Baden silver Merit Medal on the war (MKFVO) ribbon, WWI Honor CRoss X, Prussian Red Cross Medal, and Hungarian WWI Commemorative Medal. A nice bar and probably a frontline medic.

Ribbon bows--interesting one there with the orange, green, black, and yellow (yuck! see Carl evans's ribbon bar post for a similar one--Carl, your center stripe was once this ornage too) = saxe-Weimar 1918 "Merit Cross for Homeland Merit During the War Years 1914/18" a very unusual tall rounded end crucifix shaped cross with a pierced crown suspension, and a Prussian Red Cross ribbon.
