    Kaiser-Abzeichen

Hello, does anyone know the criteria for the award of the Kaiser-Abzeichen ? It was obviously an annual award, (I have an Infantry pattern, 1898), but how was the award decided ? Incidentally, a while back at a London arms fair, one dealer had about a dozen, take your pick of the years ! Most had a seperate year plaque, held in place by a couple of prongs. All in bright gilt, heard talk that they are coming from Poland or one of the Eastern bloc territories.

Hi Grahme the Kaiser / Konig Abzeichen Est. in 1895 and was awarded to the company within an a Army korps which, during a series of elimination contests, emerged with the highest standard of marksmanship, this was retained by the men for a year, but by the NCOs for the duration of thier service with the company. Should the company win the award 3 times it became permanent insignia for both NCOs and men

I my self have a Prussian 1896 infantry version of this badge appears cast (?) in brass with a field grey material backing but the insignia is attached to a pice of cardboard through the material by 6 short flat prongs. along with it came the date 1896 seperately (same criteria as above)and also seperately x2 sew on aok leaves? ,a guilded brass Bavarian crown, a ornate L and a figure 6.
i purchased these items about 15 years ago for the sum of £5.00from a dealer who reckoned they were horse brasses!!!!

What type of fixings is present on your badge and is it Prussian ?

Hello, and many thanks for the valuable info. My K-A is Prussian, die struck in one piece from heavy duty brass, with a zinc backpiece roughly following the outline of the badge. It's held on by 6 brass prongs 1 top of crown, 1 either side of crown, & 1 either side of wreath, i at bottom of wreath . Paid a bit more than horse brass prices ! Have you seen evidence of wrong ones ? I saw my first crop at the Islington Saturday Arms fair, which is now bloody useless.

Hi Grahme, except for the zinc backing iam sure that our badges are the same. The information that i gave is from a sall book (58 pages) titled Jager & Schutzen Dress and Distinctions which was published in 1977 for the sum of £2.95 (Those were the days!!)and has released the odd snippet of info though not a what i would call a `collectors `book but if you see it grab it.Are you strictly an imperial collector? e-mail me and let us know im afraid i rarly go to the major fairs due to other commitments, but know some dealers who do.

Hi, there was a good 2 or 3 part article on these in the early OMM magazines, I have the magazines but no scanner, otherwise I'd post, but I am sure with so many well-connected (and technically equipped) forum members someone ought to be able to help you out with the complete story!
          Greetings, Schleppfux
