These are not the highest quality pieces, but they are real. I kind of stay away from the painted versions of silver and gold, because I have seen too many "upgraded" badges (Black badges painted gold or silver). On the faked ones they show either no wear to the finish or show wear with black paint visible underneath the top coat. That was the first thing I looked for in the wear areas. I have to say, I did not see it on yours. Here is an example of what I am talking about. Damn shame they didn't just leave it alone. You can see the black paint around the bottom edge and on the edges of the helmet.

I am currently looking for a WW1 Gold WB and have seen one on a dealers site; however my alarm bells are ringing as there is NO wear to the gold finish in the badge at all.

What are the chances of it being an original?

It depends. Is it painted or plated? I have seen some stone mint examples, but they are few and far between. If it is painted and there is no wear anywhere (High details on front, on the raw edge of the badge, or on the hinge, pin, catch combination) you will have to judge if it looks right and hope you were right. Personally, I would pass. The silver and gold badges that were painted were issue badges and should show some slight wear somewhere. If it is plated then it is private purchase, most likely post war. I would bet a lot of these were were still in dealer stocks when the Allies rolled into Germany in 1945. So, A stone mint example is scarce, but not unheard of. If you were having doubts before you saw this thread, there is probably a very good reason for it. Just say no thanks and look elsewhere.

If you are talking about the first one at the top of the list, I am not sure myself. I would like to see it in person to examine the helmet area in particular. It almost looks as if some damage was repaired. If you look closely, you might see what I am talking about.

Nice examples Ron. I have a silver one in my collection that is like the silver one here, same hinge pin as well. Imperial gold versions are not rare, but are not as easy to find as the silver, and the "common as dirt" black variety.
