    What is this ribbon for?

Does anybody have a clue what this ribbon is for? I thought it is most likely Imperial German that´s why I posted it here. It seems like a Kämpfer-EK2 ribbon with the colours of Baden lined up on one side of it. I could be completely wrong here, so any help is appreciated. Do not get thrown off by the paper thing that holds this ribbon, it is WWII ("Sudeten" written in Sütterlin on it, held ribbon for the Sudetenland-Anschlussmedaille) and not neccessarily connected with that ribbon. The ribbon is not modern, it got it in the seventies directly from a WWII veteran with other ribbons, he couldn´t exactly say what it was.

    Cheers, Frank

    Frank,

During WWI wealthy officer or aristocrats used to put "multiple" ribbons at the botton hole of their uniform, so they wouldn't have to wear the ribbon bar.

Here I show you an image that better explains how some officers liked to put this "multiple ribbons" on their uniforms:

This Litewka of Obltn. Max Immelmann "genannt Adler von Lille" was on the auction catalogue Nr. 38 of Hermann Historica (29. Oktober 2001). As you can see in this case the "multiple ribbon" is composed of a IC ribbon + the ribbon of "Albrechts-Orden, Sachsen". Yours is probably a composition of IC and the "badischer Militärischer Karl-Friedrich-Verdienst-Orden"... just my "educated" guess!

    Ciao,

    Claudio

I think the one of WWI are quite rare, since it was quite a sophisticated way of displaying the ribbons on the tunic. I have never seen such being sold at Militaria shows and by Militaria dealers on the Internet, but it doesn't mean anything. Perhaps there isn't a market yet for these things.

Combined WWII ribbons are much more common and were frequently used, because it was just more easy to wear. In WWII I have never seen these combined ribbons being placed at the 2nd button hole of the tunic. There were quite a lot soldiers who had such combinations of ribbons: EK II and Winterschlacht im Osten, or EK II and KVK II. These are very common and were mostly used to make simple ribbon bars. I have seen also large blue ribbons on ribbon bars, in order to put two long service devices on it. Just less work...

      Ciao,

      Claudio

Thanks for that info, Claudio, I have been wondering for many years what that ribbon exactly is. Anybody who has more pictures of those, please post away.

Here's my addition to the ribbon oddities. null It's much heavier than the average ribbon, and feels like cotton, but the match test says silk. It's been on the EK for a long time, and is creased horizontally as if it were on a Schnalle at one time. If it's the real deal it's for 6-7 awards, but other than the EK I haven't a clue.

Wow, Tom, and I always thought mine was weird! Yours looks like the "ribbon for EK2 receipiants, Woodstock-campaign".

No kidding, while mine and Claudio´s examples look halfway German, yours must be something else. I cannot detect any section in it that could represent an actually existing German ribbon. Thanks for sharing, strange things are at least as much fun to look at as beautiful "ordinary" stuff.
