Looks like a Norwegian Order of Saint Olaf. Per Werlich, Norway's only order and one of Europe's most esteemed. Awarded for exceptionally outstanding civil or military services. Awarded in five classes. Men, women and foreigners are eligible. Founded 1847.

Also, bump back your circa a bit. Those cap insignia were worn 1934-35 and were normally "gone" by 1936, but I see two Wehrmacht long services so can't date earlier than October 1936. I am QUITE surprised to see those cap badges this late! Can't make out his south German style ribbons at this angle. Got any others?

      Excellent photo and scan, BTW.

        PS

Per Hieronymussen, the grades of this order are Grand Cross, Commander with Star, Commander, Knight 1st Class and Knight. Herr Oberst appears to be a Commander (Military) unless there's a star floating around there under his EKI.

          Nice and arcane.

That is an excellent photo of a rare bestowal. I am thrilled to have seen it and thankful that Jeff has shared it with us.
It would be very interesting to learn the circumstances under which this awrard was conferred.
This guy looks like he has been exposed to the elements a bit.

            actually...

actually, it's one of 6 portraits of different officers and they are all dated and signed (except this one) by the officers themselves-this on is just dated: 26/9/38.
I was going to try and dazzle you all with more snaps-but they are turning out to be too large (100MB) to post. I shall try to reduce them to proper KB size.

This fellow with the outdated parade Waffenrock and hat appears to be a Bavarian. He was NOT the Army AttachƩ to Scandinavia (since 1937), Oberst iG von Uthmann. I can't imagine how he could or would have gotten that grade Norwegian Order without having been in some similar capacity though... perhaps the Assistant AttachƩ? I just don't have that level of Third Reich references.

If the ribbon bar was clear, I'd have a better chance of turning him up.

Note that he is NOT wearing any regimental numbers, which makes me think of an officer "attached" to the OKH of the type wearing their previous branch of service uniform.

Another one for Bernhard or Glenn--

It looks like signature is "Berger," for which no match. But if it is BERGEN--

Hans (Johann) Bergen, born 5 March 1890, commissioned in 10th Bavarian Inf Rgt, served in LaPo during the Weimar Republic, then back into army-- might be a match.

Keilig's 1950s one paragraph bios are too sketchy. Looks like 20th Infantry Regiment boards, yet Keilig says Bergen was in Inf Rgt 62 then. Oberst 1.10.37 #2, ultimately Generallleutnant 1.10.43 and Knight's Cross winner.

I just can't get a lock on apparent signature, unit according to boards, and the thoughtless fellow isn't wearing his ribbon bar!

Only the Biblio Verlag bio will match whether he is indeed Bergen, flew during WW1 (alas Neal O'Connor's first volume on Bavaria had nothing like the detail of all the other volumes!), and might be this officer.

                      Bergen

                      Rick,

I don't think that is Hans Bergen. Bergen did not fly in WW1 and he does not look like the general pictured in "Die Generale des Heeres"

                      Regards
                      Glenn

I was outbid, did anyone from the forum buy it?
And here is the ribbon bar. Any chance to ID him now?
