    M1915 Bluse

I wonder if anyone on the forum can advise me about the colours of M1915 bluse collars. As you all know Bavaria adopted a bluse with a field grey collar, whilst other bluses had the collar faced with "badge cloth". A 1918 dated bluse in my collection -which has no post-war alterations- has a collar that I would say is light apple green, but this contrasts with a M1915 greatcoat I also have, where the collar is noticeably more green. In other collections and museums I've noticed a range of shades of green from grey-green ( reseda green, as some German dealers call it) to almost a lime green. My question is, is there any methodology to this, or is it just down to different manufacturers and/or colour fading over the years. One theory is that the grey-green collar facing is a late-war touch, similar to the bands found on late-war feldmutzes. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Paul.

I know that, as the war went on, the quality of the fabric and the pigments deteriorated, so the colours changed quite quickly. I have a field bottle with a once field gray cover, which has turned blue now.

      Color is objective

      Paul,
I do not believe that differences in dye-lots have anything to do with the war. For example, I can lay down a dozen pre-war Waffenrock here so the collars are side by side, no two have the same red due to differences in manufacturers, fading with sunlight, dust, and any other number of factors. I can lay down 2 dozen ORs cloth shoulder straps, all of which are supposed to be "blue" and you will be lucky to find two the exact same color. In regards to your observation,s for some reason, every M1915 greatcoat I have seen or owned, had a very "apple green" collar, while the Bluse tend to vary more in shade. I have observed that many people jump at the opportunity to blurt out "well its late war you see" when that probably has nothing to do with it. However, the collar should never be a dark green like the bands on M1916 Einheits-Feldmütze. That was strictly an effort to dispose of the red. As I read over this, it appears to be a long posting that helps you very little. Good luck with your collecting, Tony http://www.kaisersbunker.com

        M1915 Bluse

Jan and Tony (and Kaiser), many thanks for your thoughts, both of which actually were very helpful, it's the kind of question that was looking more for the observations of other collectors than a definative answer. Once I get round to upgrading and buying a new scanner I'll post some pictures of my uniforms here, in the meantime -for those of you that don't already know about it- Tony's excellent website will give you plenty to drool over, both feldgrau and dunkleblau.
