    Kptlt. Bernd Wegener

Does anyone have information about Kptlt. Bernd Wegener. Komdt. of
U-27 in World War I. He was born 22.05.1884 and died 19.08.1915 when
the U-27 encountered the Q-Ship Baralong. The entire crew of the u-
boat perished in a gristly battle. What decorations were awarded to
Wegener ? Probably both classes of the Iron Cross, as a guess. Any
information about this, also dates of awards ?

Great Picture ! It is sad to see what happened to the crew of the U-27 and to others ( on both sides ). There is a fine line between waging war and atrocity with much depending on who is the winner and who is the looser.

We also have a book written about this.

Slaughter at Sea: the truth behind a naval war crime author: Alan Coles.
Published in London by R. Hale, 1986. ISBN 0709025971

Now if the local library can come up with a copy !
