    Clam EK1

    Here's my only Clam-shell crew-back.

Are these period ie pre 1918 or are these between the 2 wars? This example is one-piece and magnetic (the clam is non-magnetic).

Profile of clam. Does this differ from the TR clam-shells?

      Hi Richard,
Yours is the only other ray back or clam shell style besides mine that I have seen posted in Imperial for the last few years. You bring up some interesting questions that I do not have any good answers to. IMO you almost have to judge the cross itself not considering the back. For example--do we assume that 1 piece EKs are late war or 1920s pieces? I am not sure.

My ray back is from a different manufacture. It is a 3-piece, non vaulted.
with almost a Godet style crown. The backplate is almost as heavy as the cross. 13.8 grms. and is 800 silver marked.

Yours has the screw post attached to the cross while mine is attached to the backplate.

BTW-Yours is a very lice looking cross. I have the pin back style cross from the same maker and have always liked the VERY NICE detail of the crown.

          Hello,

brief question: Is the core plated with copper or does the photographe cheat?

Here are mine clamshell crosse, both made by the Deumer firm during 3rd Reich period.

Hard to tell but it could be copper plated then plated with silver.

                    Hi Richard,

the question has had the reason 'cause I knew that from early crosses 1939 which have made by Deumer.
I have never seen another manufacturer with this copper plated core yet.
So I venture to say it could be the same maker.
What do you think about this thought?

sence these are non-magnetic, Do you think that the iron core is copper plated and then siver plated???
Could it be that they are made of copper sheet and then silver plated? Copper is softer then iron and when struck it would be able to get more detail. As we see in the very fine detail of the crown.

                      Heinrich,
Can you post a close up of the crown on yours?
                      Thanks,
                      Greg

                        @ Greg
I am a little bit confused.
Richard has written it is one piece and magnetic

                          You are right.
I was looking at mine which is non-magnetic.

                          sorry for the confusion

                            Hello Greg,

here's a closeup of the crown.

                            Hope it helps.

                              Heinrich

From your picture I would say the crown does not match with what is on mine. So I can only deduct it is not from the same maker. Also, the method of screw-back attachment is also different. As you can see, on mine the screw is attached to the cross and not the clam. On both of yours it is the other way.
