    W-S Cased EK I

Do you think that 225 euros for this cased EK I is high-way robbery? In other words, is this one worth buying?
    Here are some pics...

I think it is a little high considering the condition of the case but the prices are rising quickly. The cross itself looks to be in pretty good condition.

        Blitz-

I absolutely agree with Greg. It's a nice looking EK. The case is a bit beat up though, and I think the price reflects that. Usually a cross like this, in a case that is in better condition, will go for about 250 euros. If this is the kind of thing you want then I would say you should go for it. It's all about personal preference -it's all about how picky you are in regards to condition.

        Best of luck,
        Brian

Yep i know what you mean. And believe me, i can be quite picky sometimes
But it's not bad for a first cased EK, is it? I prolly go for it

            Blitz-

I have NO IDEA if it is still available, but if you're going to spend $225, you might as well spend $240 and get this one...

If the link doesn't work then go to Carsten's site and look at item#2396 under the Iron Cross section.

            Just my two cents.

                  Whoops!

I didn't see the crack. Oh well, I guess that is why it's $240.

                  Sorry,

I guess it comes down to personnal preference. I wouldn't get it myself. I like them in better shape, unless it is an unusual type. There are quite a few cased EK1's out there, they pop up all the time. There has been a few really good looking ones here on the e-stand. I would wait until one you are really happy with comes along.

Brian you had a nice one not to long ago on the e-stand.

The one on Carsten site with the cracked core is not uncommon for EK's but I wouldn't (just preference) I don't see to many 1914's with a cracked core I have seen more 1870's with the crack.

Happy hunting! I enjoy the search!

                      Hi Blitz,

I can't help you decide what cross to choose - that comes down to personal preference. Mine is biased AWAY from mint examples and towards honestly worn examples which have "character", not to say I don't appreciate an example in pristine condition. I can't tell you if you're paying too much either - that comes down to how much value you as a collector place on the item.

As for cracks in the iron cores, I agree, it's not that uncommon, however to me, seeing that true cast iron "dimpled" appearance to the surface of the iron core (as pictured above with the cracked core) is indicative of the early (eg 1870 EK) manufacturing techniques and I find them much more desirable than more fancy iron cores (again, this is personal preference).

Regarding maker's, S-W (as pictured at the top of the thread - not W-S as indicated in the thread title) is less common than, eg, a KO marked cross so if I had a choice of a KO or an S-W at the same price/condition, I'd go for the S-W. The maker plays a certain part in value as well, even for plain old flat crosses.

                      Regards
                      Mike K
                      Regards

Yep, sorry about the mistake. As it comes down to personal preferences, i really don't like cracks, allthough i would buy a 1813 EK regardless of any cracks . As Mike, i like to see some character on the awards i buy, but i can endure one in mint condition. Too much is too much Anyways, my hunting trip came up with this, a KO EK in an all around good condition. Opinions?
