WW1 leather flight jacket

    WW1 leather flight jacket

    Today while going through some things I have in storage, I found my old leather flight coat which I had as part of a display of my Imperial flight items.
    I thought you might enjoy some pics of it.

    Other things I have are a few pieces of fabric from planes, one piece being from Richthofens Dr.1 (425/17), a cased Juncker Pilots Badge and a miniature stickpin of the pilots badge in 800 silver.
    If there is any interest in the other items, let me know and I will try and post a few pics.

        Blanket lining and tag.
        When I got this item the seller was trying to sell it to me as an SS Panzer leather jacket as at some stage someone has written on the label with texta "SS 43 Panzer".

        The label has a large "3" on it and I have seen the number "3" stamped on some Imperial EK1's, etc. Maybe some sort of marking from an issueing depot?

          This is the piece of fabric from Richthofens 425/17, along with a piece of wing fabric from a British plane shot down over France in 1918.

          The writing on the back of the Richthofen fabric is in indelible pencil and says-

          "From the plane of Baron Manheim Von Rehthofen (sic)
          Shot down by Lewis Gunners of 53rd Bty AFA
          11AM 21-4-18"

          The pic is not that clear as it is framed but it is a genuine peice of fabric from Richthofens triplane. I purchased it from an old gent who had it for over 40 years and he recieved it from the nephew of a member of the A.I.F. who had souvenired it from Richthofens aircraft which had crashed near his units position. The old gent (who has since passed away, he was 75yo in 2000 when I purchased it from him) also had some fabric from the wing section of a D.VII in the 4 pattern lozenge camouflage which I have as well. I have written provenance from him attesting to where he got it from and how long he has had it. The only reason he sold it to me was he was writing a book and needed finance to publish it but passed away before it was completed.

            Hi Brett, I would attribute the the label with the number "3" on it as being a size label? But to be honest, I think it is a civvy jacket.

            The fabric from the aircraft sounds interesting. I would like to see the camo one too if you have time to add some pics.

              Hi Ade,
              Here are some pics of the camo fabric. They are not the best pics as I have taken them at night and the fabric is in a frame but as you can see, the colours are still good on the reverse but due to the doping going yellow with age they are not clear on the front.

                        Brett, about your WWI jacket, I am not doubting your word but I have a jacket which is the same, but no fur collar, but I was told that mine was of WWII era. How can you tell yours is WWI?

                          Good question and I will tell you why I feel it is WW1.
                          First there is no Third Reich markings on it whatsoever but it is definately a military issue jacket as evidenced by the grey blanket lining. Most TR tunics that are issued have precise size stamps with waist, length, etc. so I think it is not TR period.
                          Second, it is of a style and cut that I see in lots of WW1 pictures, especially of airmen. (I collect Sanke cards and have seen lots of pilots with similar style jackets). This style of jacket I have not seen in any WW2 pics.
                          Thirdly, and this is not really any proof, but the entire jacket is made up of natural fibres with no man made fibre whatsoever which is good as a lot of TR stuff has man-made fibre as part of its construction. The collar on this is lambswool and had been on the jacket for many years by the looks of it.
                          I would love to see a pic of your jacket and any thoughts as to why yours is maybe WW2 and some thoughts as to where and when it was worn during WW2.
                          Mine has written on it "SS 43 Panzer" in texta but I can not imagine this style of coat being worn in combat much less in a Panzer.
