Does the top portion of the crown ( the cross in particular) appear to be reworked or repaired? My opinion is that it is a good one from what I can see. Usually a dead giveaway on the fakes is an extra berry to the inside left of the wreath, just at where the slope of the mountain starts.

          Alex,
Would I be correct in assuming that this example Is non-magnetic, being stamped stamped from a silver sheet? The reason that I ask, is that the issue pieces were of silver plated steel, magnetic, and usually have the same type of hinge, pin and clasp that issue period wound badges had. I think your example is a private purchase silver type because of the hinge and pin.

            Hi Alex,

I also have a stamped version of this badge. The detail on yours looks good, and it has a nice patina. The only differences from mine would be the hinge and pin. Mine has a thinner, more rounded pin, with a hinge that extends further out horizontally. Could the Hinge/pin be a repair of some sort?

I would like to add that the cross on mine has a thinner base to it, but this detail may very from badge to badge.

FWIW, my badge is also non-metallic, possibly an alloy of some type. I don't think it's solid silver, but I am not 100% sure.

            regards,

            Darren

                Hi again,

Being that it's Bavarian, it is much more rare then a Prussian issue badge. I have seen them sell for around $500 - $600 (US). I think I bought mine for $530.

                regards,

                Darren

Steven, I am not sure I have ever seen this "exta berry" that you mentioned. Would you have a pic you could post or e-mail me?

Alex, brass was often used for these badges and then they were given a silver wash. Perhaps? Normally though, they are magnetic and silvered. Tony

                    Hi Tony,
I made a slight error in my statement concerning the extra berry. The Prussian Pilot badge is the example I was thinking of when I mentioned it. I have a picture somewhere that I downloaded from e-bay a long time ago that shows the Prussian version with a slightly deformed house and extra berry at the mountain slope. I'll look for it.
