    1870 EK2 hook

    Hello,

I had a look behind the band on my 1870 and found a hook marked "STEEL". The hook is for attaching the EK ring to the band. Could this STEEL be the company that mounted the medal?

        Stefan,
I cannot tell whether the hook is brass or steel. If it is magnetic it probably means the hook itself is steel. If brass, it could be the maker of the hook. Steel in German is Stahl, most likely it is just a type of hook that was made in Germany for the export market. I have seen WW1 officers pants with buttons marked "For Gentlemen" etc. When the war started, the blockade made trade in german goods very difficult. Many makers would have been "stuck" with export goods they could no longer export and therefore they were sold and used in Germany during the war.

          Thanks Dan,

yes, it is magnetic. I just thought it a bit odd to stamp "STEEL" on such a little item.

          Cheers,
          Stefan
