What type of cross is this one?

    Hello!

I've purchased a set of varoius items from the estate of a fomer aviator. This cross was among them. The aviator was a member of a maintenance unit, maybe he had a pilot license.

My main field of interest are airfields, buildings and equipment and I've no idea what type of cross this could be.

One more silly question: What could be the reason why the aviator received this award?

If I've posted this in the wrong section, please be free to move this thread to the right one.

    I'm thankfull for any details!

Hi Guenter, it is a 1914 issue Iron cross Second class.

      Awarded for bravery.

      Cheers, Ade.

        Hi Adrian,

thank you very much for your answer!

So this cross is from WW1 and nothing in particular.

Guenter, Ade is correct. These are very common. The only question on these is the date of manufacture and award. Obviously sometime from 1914-1918.

Uuuuppsss, really there is a marker on the ring!

              ring inside to outside: W?
? looks more like a symbol than a letter.

              outside to inside: ?M
              ? is either something like a symbol or a "K" or a "b" or ...

Among the above mentioned set was a picture frame with brocken glas. In this frame was the cross and the ribbon. There were no documents regading the cross or the reason for the award.

              Best Regards
              Guenter

The name could be Heinz Munz.

I'm not sure if all the items are really belonging togehter.

The backside of the mentioned frame was made from a fruit crate which is about 20 years old.

The frame itself seems to be genuine WW1 because I've a similar frame from the estate of my grandfather.

I'll show some more pics asap.

I'm not interested in most of these items and now considering what to do with them.
