    WWI Ribbon bar and medals

I got this from a friend in Munich many years ago. I do not know exactly what they are. Could anyone help?

The first is a Maltese cross with swords the reverse of which bears a Lion and the year 1866 on the center. The front bears the word Merenti and has a crowned "L" (for Ludwig?). I just noticed that the cross in on backwards. The ribbon has the Bavarian colors.

The second is an oval badge that looks to be a commerative badge with a quote from Hindenburg. My German is not the best but - "...we went to battle and for four years gone against a world of enemies..." It is from Der Kyffhausserbund.

The Bavarian Military Merit Cross is a 3rd Class award, which would have been given to grunts up to the rank of unteroffizier.

          Thank you Gentlemen! Much appreciated.

What would the war merit cross have been awarded for?

It was basically the Bavarian equivalent of the Prussian Iron Cross. The different grades were based upon the rank of the recipient.

At Detlev's recent offering he sold a series of documents to a J. Memmel Dip. Ing. who ended WW2 as a Major (or probably Oberstlt. zv) in a Nachrichten Abt. 53. His first award in 1915 as a private was this MMCx. It's a neat group-especially as Memmel eventually received Croation medals.

              p.s. below is not Memmel
