Whoever he was, I would presume he was a bavarian and aside from the PLM, it appears to me that the buttonhole ribbon was for the MMJO!! I would also presume that the first ribbon on his bar is the Bavarian MMO.

        Hi!

Dave is correct - it is a Bavarian, General der Infanterie Arnold Ritter von
        Möhl.

        Regards,

            Humberto:

The Bavarian Military Max Joseph Order (MMJO) is a VERY high decoration. I believe there were less than 250 bavarian officers and a handful of prussians who were awarded this order during the war. You were "knighted" for the Kingdom of Bavaria (the "Ritter" in his name) with this award.

The MMJO would be roughly the Bavarian equivalent of the Pour le Merite.

The top military honors of the major German states were:

Prussia: Order "Pour le Merite" (Orden Pour le Mérite, or PlM)
Bavaria: Military Order of Maximilian Joseph (Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden, or MMJO)
Saxony: Military Order of St. Henry (Militär St. Heinrich-Orden, or MSHO)
Württemberg: Order of Military Merit (Militär-Verdienstorden, or wMVO)
Baden: Military Merit Order of Charles Frederick (Militärischer Karl-Friedrich-Verdienstorden, or MKFVO)

There were 246 MMJO Knight's Crosses to Bavarians and 6-7 to non-Bavarians in World War I. There were 685 or 687 PlMs. From Baden, 288 MKFVO Knight's Crosses were awarded. The Saxon and Württemberg awards were somewhat less exclusive. MSHO Knight's Crosses came to 2,728 and wMVO Knight's Crosses to 2,183.

I'll bet that the photographer got a thorough ass-chewing for letting the good general have his photograph taken with his chinstrap askew.

Well, I'm afraid I don't, but by surfing the Internet, I was able to locate a little information...........

The official history of the MMJO during WW1 Virtuti pro Patria: Der königlich bayerische Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden confirms...only 6 non Bavarians received the Knight's Cross and none of them airmen. A further 20 very senior non Bavarian commanders and/or Royals received the Grand Cross and a further 7 Commander's Crosses were bestowed on foreigners

                      and.......

Fregattenkapitän Karl August Nerger, Commanding Officer, Auxiliary Cruiser SMS Wolf (II), he was also one of six non-Bavarian recipients of the Military Max Joseph Order during WWI. He received this award on 1 May 1918.

I could add Generalmajor Carl Nicolai, who was probably no bavarian ...

I think he was Badener, lived in Karlsruhe an was in XIV. Armeekorps ...

Add to the list of non-Bavarian Knights of the Military Max Joseph Dohna-Schlodien (another raider captain) & Otto Weddigen the U-boot captain plus three general staff officers whose names escape me at the moment.
