Blue Case - what is it for?

I got an EK1 from 1939 in a blue case - the case does not belong to the EK1.

I have no idea about the usage of this case - can anyone help?

Joerg,
Can you lighten the picture of the inside of the case, Specifically the velvet area where the item would rest? I cannot see any detail as to what would have been in the case originally. I do agree it is not for an EK, I have seen cases like this for non-portable medals that are awarded for sporting events in pre WW1 Germany. There is no way to say for sure without another photo.
